Summer is finally here! Below is a list of things to do in the Lehigh Valley in June.
Flag Day – Flag Day honors the resolution passed by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, which officially adopted the stars and stripes design for the national flag. The idea of celebrating Flag Day was first proposed in the late 19th century, and it was established as an annual observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.
Father’s Day is a special day dedicated to honoring fathers and celebrating their contributions to their families and society. In 2024, Father’s Day in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many other countries will be observed on Sunday, June 16. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. It was initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. The idea of Father’s Day gradually gained popularity, and in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a national holiday in the United States.
The Summer Solstice in 2024 will occur on Thursday, June 20. This day marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and it is the moment when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky at noon, directly over the Tropic of Cancer. The Summer Solstice is a powerful time to celebrate the beauty of nature, the abundance of light, and the energy of the sun. Whether through ancient traditions or modern gatherings, it offers a unique opportunity to connect with the natural world and each other.
Annual Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival on June 22. Head to Hamilton Street in downtown Allentown and celebrate Blues, Brews, and Barbecue all the way from 8th street to the ArtsWalk! Every year, over 20,000 visitors gather in the Queen City for the annual Blues, Brews & Barbecue festival.
