It’s that nice time of year again when the days are longer and we’re outside more often. But there’s something we need to be concerned about as well. The CDC says, “Less than half of older adults protect their skin from the sun when outside for an hour or more on a warm, sunny day. This may raise their risk of getting skin cancer.”
This doesn’t mean we should not go out. Here are 5 key practices that older adults should do, but many do not.
- Stay in the shade. Not always possible but when it is, take advantage of a shady spot.
- Use sunscreen. Ensure what you’re using doesn’t have adverse effects.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat. Fashionable or not, it’s healthier for skin and eyes, and it’s cooler!
- Wear clothing to the ankles. Legs are often under-exposed to sunlight so it’s important they’re covered.
- Wear a long-sleeved shirt. You can be cool and still cover up. Many garments have built-in SPF protection.
